Beginner Surfing Terms You Need to Know

Are you excited to dive into the world of surfing? At Surfwell Surfing Lesson on Kuta Beach, Lombok, we want to make sure you’re well-prepared for your first lesson. Here are some key surfing terms that every beginner should know, described in a casual and easy-to-understand way.

1. Lineup

This is where surfers wait for their turn to catch a wave. Think of it as the starting line in a race. At Surfwell, we’ll teach you how to place yourself in the lineup and read the waves.

2. Set

A group of waves coming in from the ocean is called a set. Sets usually have the best waves, so keep an eye out for them. Don’t worry, our instructors will help you spot them!

3. Takeoff

The moment you catch a wave and stand up on your board is called the takeoff. It’s an amazing feeling, and with a bit of practice with Surfwell, you’ll be nailing your takeoffs in no time.

4. Pop-up

This is the action of going from lying down on your board to standing up. It’s a crucial move, and we’ll practice it plenty on the sand before you hit the water.

5. Whitewater

After a wave breaks, it turns into whitewater. This is where beginners usually start because it’s easier to balance and ride in the whitewater. We’ll get you comfortable here before moving on to unbroken waves.

6. Green Wave

An unbroken wave is called a green wave. Catching a green wave is the ultimate goal for many surfers. Once you’re confident in the whitewater, we’ll help you move into and progress to these beautiful, rolling waves.

7. Duck Dive

This technique allows you to dive under an oncoming wave while paddling out to the line-up. It takes some practice, but it’s a useful skill to have. Our instructors will guide you through the steps to master the duck dive.

8. Leash

A leash is a cord that attaches your ankle to your surfboard. It keeps your board from getting away from you if you fall off. Safety first – always wear your leash!

9. Stoke

The feeling of pure joy and excitement you get from surfing is called stoke. It’s what makes surfing so addictive. At Surfwell, we guarantee you’ll be feeling the stoke after your first lesson.

10. Wipeout

When you fall off your board, it’s called a wipeout. It happens to everyone, even the pros! Don’t worry about it – just get back on your board and try again.

11. Shaka

The shaka is a hand gesture often used by surfers to greet each other. It involves extending your thumb and pinky while curling your other fingers. It’s a symbol of the friendly and relaxed surfing culture you’ll find at Surfwell.

12. Swell

The series of waves generated by distant weather systems is known as a swell. Swells are what bring waves to our beaches. Learning to read the swell will help you understand the best times to surf.

13. Riptide

A riptide is a strong current that can pull you out to sea. It’s important to recognize and avoid riptides for your safety. Our instructors will teach you how to spot and deal with them.

14. Grom

A young surfer, usually under the age of 16, is called a grom. At Surfwell, we welcome surfers of all ages, so bring your kids along for some fun in the waves!

15. Quiver

A surfer’s collection of different boards is called a quiver. As you progress, you might find yourself wanting different boards for different conditions. But for now, we’ll set you up with the perfect beginner board.
